This is Friday to Friday, your weekly rap wrap-up going through our favorite releases in rap and hip-hop from Friday, May 22nd to Friday, May 29th. My name is Jacob. I'm a mixing and mastering engineer from California and your host for today. And I have with me the whole crew including artist, producer, and DJ hailing from the Twin Cities, Minnesota, Terry V.

Before we get into talking about our favorites from this week, here's the full list of projects released. And as promised last week, we're going to go over our thoughts on JPEG Mafia's experimental rap album which came out last week. We're going to cover it this week instead. Gave us a little bit more time to listen to that one. So, let's get into our picks.

I'm going to kick it off with JPEG Mafia Experimental Rap. For anyone that doesn't know JPEG Mafia, not only produces all of his own music, he also mixes and masters it himself. And from my perspective, his choices as an engineer are as experimental as his songwriting. But, you know, he [expletive] knows what he's doing. And despite that, every song always sort of shouldn't work, but it always works. But, super interesting project. What did you guys think?

That was to me like the standout of the week. It's 25 songs, so I mean like it was a lot to listen to. And to me it just kept me intrigued the entire week. I also I was expecting for there to be a lot uglier music, cuz usually JPEG's very like it could be rough sometimes. I thought it was beautiful. The second half of Burning Hammer to me is like one of the most beautiful parts of the album. And then The War Over Land, that one too was just the instrumental was beautiful and immersive and like

Yeah.

sound rough at all. It was like I was impressed.

Damn near magical.

Yeah, no, I love this [expletive]

Yeah. Magical, yeah. This is my first JPEG album I listened to. The production on this album was dope. Really dope. Pop This Heat made me want to go and sample that same thing that he did, but just the inclu- cuz I've heard that sample a lot. Ariana Grande did it. Big Pun of course famously did it. There's I think it's been done before, but that guitar in there, man, um that he added on top of that sample just fits so smooth. War Over Land, oh my gosh. This is my first project listened to, so I was really I was just head over heels over the beats. And he does his own You said he does his own mixing and production. Like this

The whole thing.

This um the production was fire. It was fire. There was some songs that were like cool that not really for my ear, but even then it was still dope.

The All of the Lights sample flip that he did or his work on that

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention that.

This was dope. Cuz you guys were saying like he does like hip-hop mixed with punk rock, but a lot of the production on here was just like it's like a fusion of gospel on there on some of these records too, which was just dope.

Yeah. It's like sound of heavenly.

I think that's the title I was looking for. Like it's like heavenly.

Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. And usually I don't have like serious songs like World Over Lie on repeat, but like it's just like you said like that heavenly feeling of like floating your Charos. Yeah. It's been on repeat for me. (laughs) Yeah, this whole project was so sick to me. I really liked The Ghost of Emmett Till. Meet the Dealers. Like as soon as Meet the Dealers came on, dude, I was like what the [expletive] am I listening to in a really good way cuz I love EDM, dubstep, like all facets of electronic music. And to hear that like just nasty stabbing bass coming throughout the intro is just I love it. And then he's just rapping his ass off throughout the thing too. So The Ghost of Emmett Till really gave me like more of that kind of punk feel. The vocal samples throughout it too. I'm pretty sure it's the Swear to God Kanye's used those. That y'all feel all right? Like Life of Pablo or something like that.

Yeah.

Oh, that was on Numbers on the Boards, which is a Pusha T song that also used that.

Yeah.

He used multiple times for sure.

I was going to ask what his connection with Ye was cuz I mean with All of the Lights and then the song on there called Since I Met Ye. Like I don't know.

He has a very controversial association with Ye, which is that he only started working with him in the last couple years. So it's very confusing for his fans.

Oh, that's crazy.

I mean there's a couple of like even just like The Ghost of Emmett Till. Like there's a lot of titles of songs that are like he's definitely trying to poke the bear, you know? Like it's

Or society whatever you want to call it.

Yeah, he is protective over his sound as we saw with the beef.

Definitely embodies like this punk attitude.

But hey, you know what? Like all that stuff that he talked with the beef and everything and like this album it's like it it like yeah, there's something to be proud of for sure. Like it's definitely it is it is a really solid album and like that's a sound that you're not really hearing much, you know? So, like hey, if he wants to be confident over his music, he has every right to, for sure.

I don't know if you guys caught it, but part of the sample in The Ghost of Abraham Lincoln is Little Miss Lover by Jimi Hendrix.

Oh, jeez.

I'm sorry, what?

So, there's just like there if you really deep dive, a lot of the like sampling and areas that he like genres and songs he pulls from is really cool just to kind of see like you never would have assumed that anything like that would have made its way into a song that sounds like that.

Yeah. And I like that we each named different songs. Like we each had like two or three songs that were complete different.

Very diverse.

Yeah, I also wanted to bring up dubstep influence. It was like dubstep and hip-hop blend. I've always loved that blend, but I wouldn't be surprised if his version of that genre blend is going to spark a whole subgenre for genre blending.

I do also just want to shout out you will always lose money chasing women, but you will never lose women chasing money. I thought that song was a beautiful way to end the album.

Yeah. This so when I first heard it, like the first five songs right off the bat got me into this project. Also, it made me want to experience this project live like at a show. I can just only imagine like what the energy would be like.

He's sick. (laughs) Yeah. You seen him live? Yeah, okay. So, I saw him with Vince Staples when Vince was doing the FM tour.

I want to experience what his show would be like. It just sounds like it'll be live and the energy is just be high.

So, I will say this is the first project I'm a big fan of JPEGMafia, but this is the first project where I hear him looking backwards at his previous projects and trying to do something sort of similar.

Mhm.

And it's still good, and it's still like a bunch of really good JPEGMafia songs, but it is the first project where I was like, okay, this isn't really pushing forward as much. This is kind of like a little bit more just reusing the same sonic palettes and cadences and flows that he's kind of, you know, had success with in the past, but

I can see that.

it's still a more diverse and unique album than most artists, even with that being said. I didn't really have any standout tracks because you just have to hear it for yourself. Like a single song doesn't even tell you enough about who he is.

No.

No. It doesn't give you a feel for what the album is, either, but I definitely agree. There's always that feeling, at least in the past with JPEG albums when they come out, there's a little bit of like mystery to it that you don't know exactly what you're going to get. And so I see what you're saying, Jacob, that like this one felt a little more predictable

Is this him like, all right, stamp on my flag? Like, okay, this is this is the area that I want my stuff to to land at? And was that necessarily a bad thing that he's starting to look back at some of his previous stuff and was like, this works, so let me continue building upon this.

I don't think it's bad if you think about like the whole Earl tiff going on. Like it does kind of feel like this was like a yep, this is my lane kind of thing.

Mhm.

And it depends on what kind of listener you are, too, right? Like it's funny that it's called experimental rap cuz yeah, his previous albums have a lot more experimental elements to it, but like for me as someone who doesn't necessarily enjoy that super experimental sound, I've got more saves out of this that I usually would from a JPEG album, even though I can recognize that it's definitely a little bit more I don't know I don't know if commercial is the word, but there's more like digestible songs, but it worked out for me, you know? But yeah, I know if you go back to his previous albums, there's some there's some weird stuff. Definitely some really really yeah, yeah. But it always sounds good. It's just this definitely sounded polished, which is a good thing if he does it all himself, right?

With this being my first project, like I said, like I like the mixture of the sounds and genres, so it was pretty dope. So I had no expectations going into this project in terms of what it would sound like. Like I was yeah, I was thoroughly pleased. Like Burning Hammers though, Money is dope, Baby Girl is dope. It was I liked it. Lights, New Era, One Day It will be over. Yeah. it was yeah, I like it. For the fusion of it just trying stuff and throwing stuff against the wall and again like those heavenly sounds, those gospel and hip-hop fusions, like the dubstep joints, it was dope. Like I want to see bro live. I got to see when he's coming to town.

I definitely recommend for you to check to like his other albums. It's really it's an experience every album and it's to me that's why this one stood out cuz I actually got some saves. But like it's always a great experience for sure.

Yeah, wild ride. Especially the one with Danny Brown Scaring the Hoes. That's uh

That's probably my favorite one of my favorite album.

Yeah, I think that.

I mean Danny Brown is Danny Brown, right?

Detroit. (laughs) He's coming up here on October 8th. I think I'm going to try to go catch it.

Oh, nice. Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Yep, that was JPEG Mafia with Experimental Rap. So, next let's get into V's with Y'all One. Detroit rapper we've covered his features quite a few times. He's been staying super busy, but now we get to look at a full project from him.

Fuego.

I like this there's a specific sound that comes up often in V's production where the only way I can describe it is that it sounds like a Super Mario 64 when you go in like underwater levels and it's like a cool (laughs) little like underwater synth. I love that sound. I love it so much and V's just like floats on these sounds. I found it on like Tesla Pill especially you heard that sound.

Yeah.

And him again like it calling it an EP and giving us 11 songs I think is amazing.

Yeah.

Generous.

I don't know why it wasn't an album, but hey, not mad. I love V's. I could have saved pretty much every song on here and that's not just like dick sucking, but I was actually thoroughly pleased with this little pack cuz I'm not always like every song is fire to me cuz there is like some commonality in his music.

For sure.

But my god, start to finish I really, really like this one. Bruce Wayne Coons and Malice in the Palace are probably two of my favorites.

Yeah, Malice in the Palace.

I feel like if you going to name your song Malice in the Palace, it has to come with that type of energy. He definitely brought it with this record, Malice in the Palace. It was hard, it was heavy.

Yeah, I also really liked uh Wrong Place, Wrong Time. And then Birdman and Lose It All Today for like a more chill energy. That's the last two tracks on the project.

She floats. Like you were saying, Matt, like whatever that kind of underwater LFO like effect that a lot of artists use, he kills it. Dude, like whatever it is, the way his vocals are mixed, like

It's like that's thorough, but like smooth like butter. It's really good.

Yeah, and it's crazy cuz I mean like my boy used to engineer him before he blew up and stuff, you know? So, it's just kind of like to see this, to know we're all talking about this, to see his career is just kind of crazy. I don't like know him or anything like that, but my boy was pretty tight with him, so it's just kind of crazy to see all this, and yeah, he's banging them out.

That's (laughs) right. It's V's with y'all one. Let's talk about Black with Love Is the New Gangster. I know uh Gav, you were a big fan of this one.

Dude, you guys might want to talk about your shout-outs first cuz I'm just going to talk about the entirety of the album.

Go for it.

I ended up really just loving the whole thing. I'm a big fan of Black, and East Atlanta Love Letter is one of my favorites, but I didn't really listen to Since I Have a Lover. It just didn't hit the same. This one, I've gone back and listened to it multiple times.

Mhm.

I walked into the dispensary the other day and heard Ashin the Blunt, and it felt like I'd been hearing that song for 10 years. That to me also is like the first Thug feature, Thug song in pretty much since he got out that I've been like, "This is fire." Sounds great on this. So, I don't know, What did you guys think though cuz

definitely a favorite. Ashin the Blunt featuring Young Thug. I selected Bird Flu and then Running Late Freestyle was my other favorite.

Yes.

It felt like a full album. You can listen to it top to bottom.

Hell yeah. Felt like it hearkened back to that East Atlanta Love Letter energy. Like that album that just had so many hits on that project. I don't know. This felt really similar. We got the Sunday again with 2 Chainz. That hook is gorgeous. Story is mine. It's just kind of like very introspective. It's a pretty chill album, but there's definitely some like songs that you can kind of go like, oh yeah, this is summer. I can bump this with the windows down.

Yeah, a lot of like slower R&B kind of more singing than rapping, but then you get your few more like summer bangers in there, too.

Yeah. I don't know. I thought it was curated really well. Like it's easy to listen to in my opinion.

Well, I'm happy to hear it and especially like with the Thug feature, I already know I'm going to like it for sure.

you're going to like that Thug feature for sure, man. Check that one out.

Cool. That's Black with Love is the New Gangster. I want to talk about MGK and Wiz Khalifa with Blog Era Boys. Wow, this was interesting. This was another wild roller coaster ride. For me it was between the most cringe radio rap imaginable and like some complete heaters that I loved. They tricked me low-key cuz the first three songs are so fire and then the next three songs in a row are so cringe.

(laughs)

Yes. Okay, yes. Thank you. Thank you, Jacob. Yes.

(laughs) Do I need to listen to this now? I'm like

(laughs)

My homeboy hit me and he's a big MGK fan. He was all, "You got to check it out. It's crazy." MGK. It was kind of hard for me to get into some of his stuff. Like some of his stuff is cool and some of the stuff I'm like, "Eh." Um, but Family Over Everything. I heard it. I'm all like, "Yo, this is going to be fire." Everything's added came on, I'm like, "Okay, okay." And then I started hearing like the singing pop rock stuff and I'm all like, "Ah, I don't I don't I don't know." I love Wiz on this project. It's honestly his flow. Like Wiz's flow. Wiz has this laid-back flow. Like almost every record he gets on his tone sounds good. I didn't care too much for the singing stuff and I see why, in my mind at least, why MGK

is in front of Wiz or Wiz is all like, "Hey, I'm featured on this."

So I'm providing what I'm providing, but this is MGK's joint. So um I'mma have to go back and listen to it. It didn't necessarily remind me of the blog era or anything like that.

Me neither.

There's some hits on here. There's some misses for me, but I don't know why they called it blog boy eras. Maybe because that's what it it didn't give me that vibe from back then.

It is not blog era whatsoever. Okay, I grew up on blog era rap.

Yeah.

[expletive] that's not what this is. That's all I can say. That's not what this is at all. The first song is decent. I'm not going to lie. Family over everything it's pretty good. The beat's fire. I honestly think that carries it more than anything. The flows are good, but MGK's doing this weird like mumble rap [expletive] that is not his thing at all. And it's not like it even sounds bad, but it's just like what the [expletive] So it's not sustainable cuz like that's not him. He's just kind of imitating this style and

Yeah. No, Gav, I think that's how I felt about MGK on this project. Like it's more of like a I should sound like this because this is what it is versus it being like that's how you really coming. And yeah, it is

We heard Killshot. We know how he's really coming, you know? Like

Yeah.

MGK has a fan base. That's the thing. Like

Yeah, that's the problem, I think.

Yeah. (laughs) It's just right now I think what's happening with him is that it's creating there's so many sectional fan bases now where it's like with every album it creates a new branch of fans and like it is like how dangerous is that if he wants to fill an arena, let's say. Because then the people who show up go, "Hey, I want the album from last year. I know, I want this album." And like is he able to have a cohesive fan base that's like enjoying all of them GK, you know?

Mhm.

He just did like a punk rock thing, right? Or like a pop rock thing.

Mhm.

Yeah. It gets to my downfall. I actually listened to and liked a few songs on. So, I'm not just a hater.

No, I think that they went into the singing stuff and you know, the kind of sort of like the pop stuff on here, too. And it's like it just did not hit. I didn't like stoned. And as a guy who enjoys weed, like I it did not make me want to go smoke.

It's the it feels (laughs) like a weed song has to be unintentional sometimes where it's like it gets that vibe. But if you intentionally sit down, you're like, "I'm going to make a song about half 420. I'm going to smoke." And it's like it feels too like

this is. This is the worst like forced stoner song ever.

I roll a joint.

Yeah.

And then the last three songs were more like chill rap songs for the ladies kind of vibes. They were all right, but really those first three, especially this the first one like family over everything, check that song out. If you're like a big enough fan of either of them, then you can keep going, but it's going to deteriorate rapidly. Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Unless you're like I said, if these are your guys, then you'll enjoy it.

Right.

But if you're (laughs) on the fence, then it probably won't swing you either way.

True.

For Wiz, like he's dropped like what? Six albums this year?

Wiz has been active.

Seriously.

So, I mean, I feel like this would only be like if you love MGK, I guess. Cuz yeah, Wiz there's a lot of Wiz, you know? And like if you said where it's like if he takes a bit of a backseat, like there's Wiz can write and Wiz has hooks. Like I'm not it's not my kind of music necessarily, but like Wiz can carry a song, you know?

I don't think he did the hooks majority of these. I yeah, I think he followed. He was like, "All right, I'll follow your lead on this one, bro." And then I'll add what I can cuz there's the one where they're going back and forth and is that everything tight it? I think where they're going back and forth a bit, but yeah, no. Yeah.

I think it is a good look for him where it's like it is an additional sound to add to his arsenal. Like for MGK it's like that's the sound he's chasing, but for Wiz it's just like an extra cool collab that he didn't have before, right?

Yeah.

Yeah.

I mean we got two tapes with with Currency and Harry Fraud. So I mean this is a good change of pace for sure.

Lots of Wiz this year.

Yeah.

I don't know why they called it blog era boys, but that's MGK and Wiz Khalifa with blog era boys. So next let's get into Big Sad 1900 Colored by Emotion. LA rapper continuing to make big moves. He's on the rise as far as West Coast rappers. He has like this laid-back cadence that he pulls off perfectly over these beats that are like heavily West Coast G-funk inspired. As well as some more Bay Area influence beats, but the sound selection and the mix on the beats are so modern that they hit like modern mixes. They don't sound like old G-funk or anything like that. They sound like high quality new [expletive] but got features from Filthy Rich, Bluebucksclan, 310 Baby, and some other names as well that I wasn't familiar with, but there was no bad features on this.

Rucci.

And Rucci, yep. I was just about to say my standout tracks were Dwight Howard featuring Rucci. I haven't heard of him, but that was one of my favorites on here.

I'll check him out.

Make the Call featuring Filthy Rich,

gold on my body and same time, same place. So I liked a lot of stuff on here. It's pretty solid.

Smooth. I thought this one was fire.

Yeah, Dwight Howard was my standout. Pretty much all the features were fire, so.

Like you said, Jacob, it's mixed really well and it immediately hits like, oh, this is West Coast.

Yeah, yeah.

No question.

No.

Yep.

I got to add that to the list.

I thought I had heard Rucci before, and so I just checked and yeah, he had worked a little bit with Snoop Dogg. And then he has an album called Doggystyle, but like spelled differently, in 2017.

Okay, interesting.

Yeah.

Right on. Well, (laughs) that is Big Sad 1900 with Colored by Emotion. Ooh, West Coast project there. Let's talk about Link Sinatra with The Last Crack Baby. You want to kick this one off, Gav?

Do it. Yeah, this is actually my boy from Detroit. Been doing some stuff together. I actually had producer credits on a couple songs on this project. But yeah, this is fire. This is the kind of follow-up project to the last one he dropped with Fly Money Chills.

Right.

It was a solo project. Had a couple features, just mostly like his girl who sings.

Okay, that's his girl.

he put all the producers and everything on it as well. Yeah, Sierra Armani. And then Kens in the Benz is actually his kid.

Oh, wow.

So, she's done a couple songs as well, like kid rap songs and stuff. And so he had her do some of the backup vocals on Hurry and Wait. But yeah, this is one of my favorite projects that he's put out, personally. I really like Jazzical and the title track, The Last Crack Baby. But there's a bunch of good songs on here. I ain't going to lie, IAGL, that's one that I liked a lot. Can't be mad about the songs that I produced, but

favorite was Taxi, which was one of yours. And then I also really like Backwards. Those two were my favorites. But yeah, I like the last crack baby go straight into 80s baby, so you kind of have this 80s baby theme.

Yeah, it's like he's been around for a minute, like I was saying last time we covered their stuff so he knows what he sounds good with.

Yeah.

I checked out the lunar G placements of course you know. And yeah me too the taxi one was I really like taxi.

Yeah that was cool.

But I got to check out the whole thing for sure.

Uh there was a few mix engineering notes that I had in here and there but good rapper good project so I enjoyed listening to that this week.

Oh yeah.

Cool so next let's talk about 1UP Tee with Upper Volume 2.

Fire younger Detroit rapper on the come up right now. Does the modern Detroit flow but his lyrics are a little bit more introspective maybe than some other people that hit that same flow and I really like his hooks too. And then of course bro got the Rio feature on Mindset.

Had to get Babyface E too.

Yep and then Babyface E features well on back and forth and I also love Save Your Money has a great keys part in the front of the mix and then this horn part that kind of sits far back in the mix but it adds a lot. That's a dope one too. Yeah and there's just a lot of bangers on here like Head Turner. There's actually a song called just called Detroit on here which I think funny enough Link also had a song called Detroit on his album.

Yeah. I was going to say he performed that a couple weeks ago for the Hot 107 radio station out here power hip hop radio that's pretty big. Performed it at their showcase and like did an interview on the radio for it and [expletive] Yeah.

Nice. Fire.

But yeah crazy this project was sick. I a lot of the ones you just shouted out Jacob is what I had play listed as well. The only one I don't think you said that I had in here is okay I lied which is don't go for it or I ain't going I think is the song before it and it's kind of just this whole like [expletive] [expletive] like they're tricks they're snakes don't go for it I ain't going. And then okay I lied is kind of like all right I take it back you know so I just I like it's kind of like playful the whole album has a lot of good hooks and [expletive] on here and I thought back and forth was one of the best like bar for bar songs that I've heard in a while like just trade-offs. I don't think anyone other than like Rio and Mike have done it much better. At least not around here lately so.

Yeah, I wanted to shout out to he put out a documentary it just in promotion of the project too just interviews him his family and people he grew up with. I just like to see that it's a cool way to just like vibe check the artist just kind of see what they're about. Yeah, good [expletive] so that's 1 Up T with upper volume two.

Last full length project we'll talk about is Don Trip and Eddie Valero with Armageddon. Just really [expletive] quality trap music. The first song Real Friends caught my attention right away with the beat with their charisma with the lyrics. And then the second song called 40 Days and 40 Nights. Yeah, I laughed out loud the first time I heard it when he said you don't even have life insurance you can't even afford to die. And by that point I was like okay I'm covering this I'm impressed.

(laughs)

And then after those first two bangers the third and fourth song are each solo songs from each of those artists and they're both pretty damn good. I would say one wasn't really better than the other they both can [expletive] rap and then my other favorite songs were the perfect plan make a toast and differences. So strong project from two good rappers just going back and forth. Check this one out for sure.

Looking at StarLito's stuff I see that they did Don Trip and StarLito have like an On The Radar freestyle together so. Cuz hey this guy like he's been dropping music since 2008 which is crazy.

On fire.

Pioneer of the Memphis sound so I mean hey that's I definitely got to check that out. I love the Memphis hip hop so I mean this was

Yeah, I know it's fire.

me. You guys will like it for sure check it out.

Uh, yeah, I've been just making beats. Just working as usual, but other than that just going through uh Terry's songs as well. Uh, I think there was a good 84 songs and I listened to each one about three times, so I mean, you know, you do the math.

Made a list, you know. Uh, yeah, but it's honestly it was fun, it was refreshing. That Matt Carrier on all socials or silkvelvetrecords.

Yeah, I've just been similarly to Matt been working on beats a lot lately. Uh, I've been pretty inspired to uh to produce some more stuff or just cook some more stuff up just by a lot of the things that we've been listening to and covering lately. Sent a demo over to Terry, so I'm excited to see what he comes up with for that.

Gav's been cooking.

Kind of polish that, turn it a song and maybe uh might be the start to like a little collab project or something. We'll have to see, but

Yeah, just been working, man. Finally feeling inspired again. It's been a lot of just stuff in the personal life. So, it's good to just be have that creative switch flipped back on.
